How to design a T-shirt

This is a great way to creatively express yourself and in doing so bless someone else!

Difficulty: Medium/Difficult

Things you will need (per t-shirt):

  • A white or light-coloured T-shirt
  • A4 white plain paper
  • Scanner
  • Inkjet printer
  • Felt-tip pens
  • An iron
  • A tea towel
  • A4 T-shirt transfer paper – available from Tesco

Instructions:

  1. First you need to think about your design. Bold and colourful designs often work the best as they are picked up easily by the computer and look really vibrant on a t-shirt. Brightly coloured smiley faces are a good idea!
  2. After you have had a few practices draw your final design on your sheet of A4 paper. Your image must now be scanned into the computer.
  3. Once it is scanned use a computer package to flip the image over (so that it appears to be back to front). Do not worry, when you print onto the transfer paper your image will magically appear the right way round!
  4. Print onto your t-shirt transfer paper (make sure you are printing with an Inkjet printer to ensure good quality results).
  5. Once your design has been printed cut out your design (making sure you leave at least 1cm around the outside edge of your design).
  6. Now place your paper (design side face down) onto your T-shirt. Make sure you place a tea-towel between the back and front of the T-shirt so that you do not fuse the two sides together with the heat of the iron! IMPORTANT: Us e hard surface such as a table to iron on transfer, do not use an ironing board as you will not be able to apply sufficient pressure during application.
  7. Iron the image, applying downward pressure and moving the iron in a circular motion to distribute heat evenly. DO NOT STEAM. Do not forget to iron the edges and corners of your design. For an A5 image, iron for 60-90 seconds and for an A4 images around 100-120 seconds.
  8. Allow the transfer to cool and then peel off the backing paper.
  9. Once they are finished why not take some photos of your group with their finished T-shirts and send them over to us for our website

TOP TIPS

  • Irons should be used under adult supervision.
  • Don’t allow the iron to get too hot as it may burn the image transfer; instead use a medium heat for a longer amount of time.
  • Please do not mention Release on your T-shirts for security reasons.
