Last year, thousands of Christians gathered in Cape Town for the third Lausanne conference dedicated to hearing what God is up to around the world and how we can support each other as we live our lives serving and sharing Jesus.
One of the most moving stories that was heard can from an 18 yr old student from North Korea, Gyeong Ju Son.
Her parents had been important government officals in North Korea, but when she was 6, they were accused of treason and forced to flee their home and become refugees in China, where they ‘came to know the amazing grace and love of God”.
Only a few months later Gyeong Ju Son’s pregnant mother died of leukaemia. Despite this tradgey, her father’s faith remained strong and he decided to become an evangelist to his people back in North Korea, committing to “sharing Christ’s message of life and hope among the hopeless people of his homeland”.
His evangelistic work was soon discovered by the North Korean government and he was arrested and imprisoned. Gyeong Ju Son has not seen or heard from her father ever since. She believes that he has probably been killed on charges of treason and espionage.
Although her parents had both been committed Christians, Gyeong Ju Son had not. She didn’t know Jesus yet for herself. But one night while she slept she encountered Jesus in a dream:
“…Jesus had tears in his eyes, he walked towards me and said "How much longer are you going to keep me waiting? Walk with me. Yes, you lost your earthly father but I am your heavenly father and whatever has happened to you was because I love you”…That night I realised God my father loves and cares about me so very much that he sent his son Jesus to die for me. I prayed “God here I am, I just lay down everything and give you my heart, my soul, my mind and my strength, please use me as you will”. Now God has pressed deep in my heart a great love for North Korea.”
Gyeong Ju Son is currently working hard to get into university to study political science and diplomacy; she then wants to work for the rights of the people of North Korea whose rights have been taken away.
“I believe God’s heart cries out for the lost people of North Korea, I humbly ask you my brothers and sisters… to have the same heart of God. Please pray that the same light of God’s grace and mercy that reached my father, my mother and now me will one day soon dawn upon the people of North Korea, my people.”
